Testimonies of memory of people of culture in the Chronicle of the „Nowa Książka” (1934-1939)

Summary/Abstract: One example of professional journals of the interwar period is „Nowa Książka. 10 zeszytów rocznie poświęconych krytyce literackiej i naukowej oraz bibliografii”. The periodical was published in 1934-1939 at the Trzaska, Evert and Michalski Bookshop Publishing House in Warsaw, edited by the philologist, literary critic, and publicist, Stanisław Lam. The structure of the magazine consisted of scholarly articles, reporting, and registration sections, as well as the Chronicle, which included minor mentions of the cultural life of the 1930s. On the basis of a critical analysis of the content of this section, ways of commemorating people of Polish culture – writers, literary researchers, translators, people connected with art and its patrons – were shown. The Chronicle most frequently informs about publications devoted to outstanding personalities, about research conducted on their lives and achievements, a little less frequently about various forms of promoting the achievements of people of culture, and sporadically about their legacy. The section also included obituaries.
