Summary/Abstract: After briefly considering the relationship between literature and sociology, this article sets to explore various representations of shame in Annie Ernaux’s novel Shame. The class conflict is aggravated here by a personal option involving embarrassment and guilt, as the protagonist moves upwards in the society, breaking up with her working-class parents and her past.
