Summary/Abstract: This paper deals with wordplay as a marker of style in the novel Pa kao [i.e. Well, as if / Inferno] by Vladimir Tabašević (2016). The main aim of the paper is to identify creative mechanisms in the formation of new lexical units, monomorphemic and polymorphemic, as well as their pragmatic, stylistic and aesthetic functions. Building on the most prominent views on lexical creativity and productivity, a theoretical framework for this research is put forward, followed by a form- and content-based classification of patterns as observed in the corpus containing 95 samples of his lexical creations in the novel Pa kao by V. Tabašević. Also discussed is the function of humour through wordplay in this functional style, which achieves the effects of irony, contrast and absurdity. Finally, mention is made of challenges to future translators of this novel into foreign languages and their cultures, specifically in conveying new words denoting new concepts through new names for old or new entities.
