Summary/Abstract: The text is grounded in the basic aims of criminal repression in order to clarify why is it generally necessary for the prison punishment to exist. Key terms here are determined as terms of illegality and illegitimacy to indicate where the limits of criminal repression should be situated. Here the treatment of convicted women is analyzed according to the existing law of prison punishment. This situation is compared with the draft of proposed new law. This is followed by the results of research among women in prisons, where as a pioneer work research done by Rose Gialombardo is mentioned. There are characteristics of women’s informal prison community system and pseudo relatives relationships. This is followed by results of research done by Ester Hefernan and her theory about the three prison social systems, prison’s deprivation, and homosexual cluster consisted of typical diad: “husband-wife” and “mother-daughter”. Further is analyzed the role of prison families, negative attitude of prison administrations, and statements, experiences of Angela Davis. The text is completed with the story about northern Ireland women’s prison Armagh and its well known “dirty strike” after which a women’s movement was born in Northern Ireland.
