Summary/Abstract: The process of dissolution of the functional structure begins with Wagner’s music. For dissonance is not resolved, thecenter remains uncertain, especially when each accord is ambiguous in terms of functionality. Altered chords with functionalpolyvalence and frequent modulations weaken the impression of tonal unity. Incursions at different levels and frequent tonalmodulations considerably weaken the tone organization. Thus, Expressionism appears.
