Summary/Abstract: The paper problematizes the ways in which the performative speech act of the verses twelve and thirteen in the Bosniak ballad “Hasanaginica” has been interpreted and translated in its English target texts. The performative speech act is analyzed in the light of J. Austin’s Speech Act Theory, along with certain rules in Sharia law regarding irrevocable divorce (al-baynuna al-kubra). Aiming to raise awareness of the importance of style in translation, the paper further confirms the value of the results obtained through linguo-stylistic analysis of the texts involved.
