Summary/Abstract: The axis of the article is an interpretation of a conversation about Wilno (Vilnius) conducted by Czesław Miłosz and Tomas Venclova, subsequently published in “Kultura” in 1979. Two aspects of this dialogue are particularly interesting and clearly outline the co-dependence of subject and space. There occurs an autobiographisation of Wilno: the participants perceived the town via their lives marked by twentieth-century history. The subject becomes localised: the space of the town co-shaped his identity. Wilno is seen as endowed with a great conflict-prone potential. The way of speaking about Wilno proposed by both poets turns it into an agora, i.e. a place suitable for an exchange of thoughts, views and ideas.
