Summary/Abstract: In the song repertoire of the Roma in Slovakia, alongside the older layer (phurikane giľa) there is a distinctly new layer of songs (neve giľa). Th is is composed of songs of heterogenous genre origin, infl uenced by popular music and also by the older layer of Romani songs. A feature common to all of them is their brief life-span in the active repertoire. Th e new layer of Romani songs may be assigned to the group of transitory songs and to the group of new songs. An accompanying phenomenon of these songs is the emergence of modern musical ensembles, using electrical instruments and composed almost exclusively of men.
