Relationship between the Church and the State in Serbia during the 20th Century

Summary/Abstract: Studying the relationship between the church and the state in Serbia during the twentieth century means taking into account the constitutional and legal decisions made by the state, which defined the treatment of all religious groups that were present on its territory. The Serbian Orthodox Church always had a special treatment of the state because it represented the largest religious community, no matter which country it belonged to – Kingdom of Serbia, Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, Kingdom of Yugoslavia, Federal Peoples Republic of Yugoslavia, Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia or Federal Yugoslav Republic. Having the biggest following of all religious communities, Serbian Orthodox Church at the same time had influence on most of the Serbian community. Because of this, the state either wanted to keep it as a close partner or completely diminish its influence.
