Summary/Abstract: The article deals with some folk and preposterous hypotheses connected with the toponym Kielce. The author concludes that the discussed toponym is often seen in correlation with the name of a pagan tribe (i.e. Kelt) as well as a Latin borrowing (calx, calcis ‘lime’) or as a dialectal phrase k’jelce ‘towards a fir’. The author concludes that such “explanations” were based mostly on phonetic associations and some popular but erroneous assumptions. These pseudo- etymological concepts are popularised by many various texts, such as legends, tales, historiographic sources, guide-books, etc. The paper also presents a description of “scientific” etymology of Kielce.
