Summary/Abstract: The aim of the present article is to outline the role of Marcus Atilius Regulus, who appears as an exemplum of heroism in St Augustine’s De civitate Dei. He is presented against a background of Carthaginian double references (i.e., both to history and to Virgil’s Aeneid) and in the light of Augustine’s reflections on time, on the specificity and function of the past, and on the memory as expressed in his Confessiones.
