Summary/Abstract: After the re-establishment of Matica slovenská national heritage organization in 1919, several new research departments were founded to provide more favorable scientific climate for scholars in Slovakia. The Linguistics Department at Matica slovenská had been of particular importance, since its activities can be considered as a basis of institutionalized research in the field of linguistics. The author for the paper describes in detail all the accomplishments of the department in the first phase of its existence (1920 – 1930), with a special emphasis on the modern Slovak linguistics have also been analyzed in the paper. The language development had been significantly by the state policy on the common “Czecho¬slovak language” as the official language of the republic. The linguistics department had responded to this, inter alia, by preparing a set of Slovak orthography. The paper points out (research is based on the materials from archives, secondary literature, linguistics related activities of scholars etc.) the activity of the Linguistics department.
