Summary/Abstract: Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) has been formed by American psychologist Marsha M. Linehan for patients with Borderline personality disorder (BPD). The diagnosis of Borderline personality disorder is understood in DBT in the same way as in Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, forth revision (DSM-IV) of the American Psychiatric Association. However, DBT rearranges the BPD criteria into logical units corresponding to the biosocial theory of BPD. An important philosophical background of DBT is dialectics as well as Zen Buddhism. Further, DBT has been significantly influenced by cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). DBT consists of four basic modules – individual therapy, skills training group, telephone coaching and consultation team. DBT has shown its effectivity in several randomized controlled studies, mainly in women with BPD who self-harm and have suicidal ideation.
