Summary/Abstract: The article is dedicated to the author’s research concerning the standards for fair criminal procedure, adopted in the European legal doctrine. The main characteristics of the proper criminal proceedings, incorporated in Art. 6 of the ECHR, are derived from the European Court of Human Rights case law. An attempt is made to establish their projection in the Bulgarian criminal proceedings. The author explores the provisions of the internal law that function as a guarantee for adherence with these requirements. The article examines the amendments to certain provisions in the Criminal Code, adopted in 1999 and afterwards, aimed at ensuring correspondence with the requirements for fair criminal proceedings in a democratic society. On that basis the practice of the criminal jurisprudence bodies is studied and some difficulties and inaccuracies in the law application process are outlined.
