Summary/Abstract: Premonstratensians were founded by St. Norbert of Xanten (c. 1080–1134), at Prémontré, France, in 1120/21. They represent a religious community which gathered contemplative and active religious life. As an order of regular canons in the 12th century they were a sort of connection between strictly contemplative life of the previous period and the life of Mendicant Orders of the 13th century. St. Norbert was a prominent figure of the early 12th century and enjoyed great respect with his contemporaries.
