Summary/Abstract: The aim of the present study is to examine and evaluate music education in democratic societies, Reimer’s aesthetic philosophy of music education, the practice of music education, the multiplicity of today’s musical learning practices, and the contribution of autonomous learning practices to formal music education. This paper seeks to fill a gap in the current literature by examining the evolution of music education, the importance of musical teaching, the development of musical identity and knowledge, the construction of musical identities, and the multilayered nature of musical identities.
