Summary/Abstract: In the history of Slovak literature and culture 1918 is the time mark customarily defined by the establishment of the First Czechoslovak Republic. However, this political transformation does not directly translate to the shape and condition of the Slovak society as well as its culture. The Slovak culture of the interwar period bears the traces of the past which significantly affect the post-1918 reality. The above thesis developed is supported by social and cultural journalists in the 1930s, among them Michal Chorváth, Alexander Matuška, and Alžbeta Gwerková-Göllnerová. This article focuses on recapping their prognoses and also on the fact of how past is present in social and cultural reality of the Slovak interwar period.
