Summary/Abstract: Environmental crisis, as a fundamental trait of modern civilisation, endangers the fulfilment of numerous human needs, their further development and even existence. The first and the second industrial revolutions turned a blind eye at environmental issues; consequently, in the second half of the twentieth century, it was pointed out that the disturbance of eco-balance was a consequence of poor synchronisation between the technological, social and biological spheres. Therefore, attempts were made at possible ways to overcome the problem and solve the society/nature "conflict". Raising the ecological awareness of a society expands the array of ecological necessities, which are in opposition to traditional economic necessities for the accumulation of material wealth and production which neglects the living environment. Among other things, the paper shows that the goal of the generally-accepted development model – sustainable development – is not only protection of the living environment but also improvement of the quality of life, because it advocates the fulfilment of both present and future generations' needs.
