ECONOMY AND ECOLOGY – THE CHALLENGE OF FUTURE

Summary/Abstract: Basic theoretical premise in this paper is the need for ensuring connections between the economic policy and the policy of environmental protection on all the levels of social communities and in all the sectors economy and non-economy and the necessity of their integration into contemporary ecological laws. The paper gives the essence of the concept of sustainable development through theoretical basis of interdevelopment of ecological and economic thought. Sustainable development implies the interaction between the development and environment through mutual conditionality and complementary of development policy and environmental protection policy by consideration of the laws of ecological systems. This is the reason why the determination of qualitative and quantitative indicators of sustainable development is a key prerequisite for improvement of sustainable society. During the nineties in the 20th century numerous programs which had the aim of elaboration of indicators of sustainable development appeared. Up to now no method for determining indicators of sustainable development has not acquired the level of general acceptance. That is why a lot of effort is being put into this field by countries and expert and scientific institutions from various fields.
