Summary/Abstract: The Russian attack on the three Ukrainian vessels in the Kerch Strait was one of the most important events in 2018. The activities of the Russian Federation caused widespread opposition of the international community. Moscow is accused of breaking the law of the sea. In response, Russia accuses Ukraine of similar violations. However, the issue of the war between these two countries remains marginal although it should be decisive for the legal assessment of this event. The article aims to assess the incident in the Kerch Strait from the perspectives of the law of the sea, to which the international community often refers, and the law of armed conflict. According to the assumptions adopted in this article, the Russian attack on the Ukrainian vessels did not violate the law of war, which is applicable in today’s Ukrainian-Russian relation.
