Summary/Abstract: After recognizing the multiple factors that determined the development of collections of landscapes and monuments in the national cultural, artistic, and literary tradition – the albums composed and edited by traveling painters (1828-1855), the rise of periodicals, from the picturesque side of costumbrismo and the dominance and inclusion of lithography (1843) – we study México y sus alrededores. Colección de vistas, monumentos y trajes del país (1855), to recognize both its interdependencies as well as its conceptual reformulations and restatements of tradition, which made it the leading work of the subgenre in Mexico. The aim is to reread and, thus, recover a foundational text(s) of Mexican literature and culture, in order to make complex the understanding of this historical and cultural process that contributed to the discursive and iconic consolidation of cultural, mental, and intellectual independence of Mexico and the Mexicans during the nineteenth century.
