Summary/Abstract: The Concepts of' Democracy and Democratization. (Some Theoretical and Practical Issues) The paper examines the different approaches to the study of democracy and democratization in the modern political science. The author frames the central dilemma confronting all states touched by the process of democratization, clarifies the concept of democracy, shows its application in different contexts, and questions the path of Slovak postcommunist transition. The article underlines that the final phase of democratic consolidation is the process whereby democratic institutions and practices became ingrained in the political culture.
