The Polish Party System after 25 Years – Theory and Practice

Summary/Abstract: The forthcoming 25th anniversary of political transformation in Eastern Europe inspires one to analyse the condition and development of chosen elements that constitute the Polish political system. The article examines the Polish party system, which remains less effective than those found in the consolidated democracies of Western Europe. The first part of the article lays out the theoretical basis of the analysis of the party system and looks at the entire Eastern Europe region with reference to this issue. The author then goes on to characterise the Polish party system with regard to the political parties that may be perceived as relevant during the past 25 years, as well as to each particular parliamentary election that formed, shaped or changed the party system.
