Summary/Abstract: This paper reviews the dialogue genre written in Mexico in nineteenth and twentieth centuries by authors such as Fernández de Lizardi, Amado Nervo, Julio Torri or José Emilio Pacheco. Its aim is to explain the sense and orientation which the dialogical form has acquired, and to establish the correspondence between today’s practice and the ancient tradition in which the poetic profile of the genre was gradually taking shape as a discourse situated between literature and philosophy. The purpose is to pinpoint some of its constitutive features based upon its link with simple forms. The analysis seeks to restitute the importance of this kind of texts which are still being relegated to the margins of literary history.
