Summary/Abstract: This article deals with the origin of the stones known as gué sant (sacred stones or guardamontes), located in the Zapotec municipality of San Jerónimo Coatlan, Oaxaca, Mexico. These stones are usually located at the highest points of the hills. I will explain how until the last century these stones received offerings from farmers, hunters and healers, but due to the change in economic activities (now focused on coffee monoculture and forestry exploitation) these practices are now carried out less frequently. Currently guardamontes are undergoing a systematic destruction without any authority intervening in the case, but the stones are still there and are evidence of a religious continuity in this region.
