Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to render an account of the application of the materials of a sociolinguistic corpus of spoken Spanish to the teaching Spanish as a foreign language as well as to the research on its acquisition. It reviews the use of the corpus materials to elaborate some classroom oriented activities furtherly treated to extract data in order to verify the proficiency in the use of verbal system of past times in Spanish by Polish students. In the study we take into account the mother tongue of the learners as a factor that could affect the linguistic production in the foreign language to research on the processes of linguistic transfer. In the analysis of the data from our study, the contrastive aspects of the Polish and Spanish verbal system are taken into consideration. One of the main objectives of our study is the evaluation of the ability of our students to select the past imperfect or simple past tense in terms of the possible transfer of our students’ mother tongue, the Polish.
