Summary/Abstract: At the time of the disintegration of the Communist regime, memory proved to be the most crucial of the collective values of the Romanian people. Moreover, it became the fundamental tool in the process of the recovery of consciousness that followed. But memory is not fool proof, and can often be misleading. The text sets out to identify the different strands of memories at work in the act of collective remembrance. In our analysis, instead of the victim-persecutor classification, we propose the concept of self-esteem that suffered significant corruption during the Communist regime.
