Summary/Abstract: Contemporary societies are complex societies and the role of education is changing under the influence of social changes. Ideas that were once natural - including that of the nation state with a unique language and culture common to all citizens - no longer seem to correspond to reality. The role of education in the lives of individuals and in the development of societies has changed and is likely to continue to do so. As multiculturalism and the plurilingualism of individuals have become ordinary realities, intercultural education has also become necessary.
