Summary/Abstract: In this paper insults are looked upon as an illocutionary act, which aims at the degradation of the addressee. The article deals the insult as evaluative speech act, the communicative goal of which is to impose the aggressor’s desire to change in a negative direction the addressee’s self-esteem, to lower his social status. In this paper, the insult is analyzed within the functional paradigm, which combines communicative-pragmatic and cognitive approach.
