Summary/Abstract: Starting from direct or indirect statements by ex-political prisoners, this essay aims to describe the most violent carceral phenomenon Romanians witnessed in the 1950s: the re-education in the Piteşti prison, where young prisoners (for the larger part students) were subjected to atrocious experiments aimed at brainwashing and unhindered indoctrination with communist dogma. The text is also concerned with the difficulties inherent in such confessions for those who present their testimonies.
