Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this essay is to reflect on the work of the Cuban-Mexican researcher Illeana Diéguez, from the perspective of the aesthetic ideas of Russian formalist philosopher Borís Eichenbaum and his contemporary, Mikhail Bakhtin. It discusses Diéguez’s philosophical, political and anthropological approach to the “aesthetics of death” present in contemporary liminal art, to the cultural status of installation and performance, and to their relation with the culture of violence of many contemporary Latin-American societies. The concepts developed by Eichenbaum and Mikhail Bakhtin during the 1920s are confronted with the contemporary topics present in Diéguez’s work.
