Summary/Abstract: The scholarly reflection on multiculturalism started in the 1970s and 1980s, when assimilation ideologies were challenged, following the rejection of racist views several decades earlier. At that time, two countries of immigrant origin – Canada and Australia – adopted the official guidelines for a multicultural society. Also in the Western Europe migratory movements have been growing in intensity since the end of the Second World War. Faced with the increasing ethnic and cultural diversity, these countries were introducing various policies related to multiculturalism. In the article, multiculturalism is conceptualized as a principle guaranteeing equality for different cultural groups based on respect for their identity and recognition of individuals and communities. In the countries of Western Europe, two models of multiculturalism can be identified: in France preference is given to universalism, while in the Netherlands a multicultural model allows for diversity within a common legal system. Canada represents an alternative model of an officially multicultural society.
