Summary/Abstract: In the Sierra Sur of Oaxaca, until now, there are few inscriptions of pre-Hispanic writing documented. Some previous reports, such as those by Manuel Martínez Gracida, have been forgotten due to the least interest that has been given to the Oaxaca region. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to present an epigraphic example that consists of a monolith with Mixtec-style writing found in a Zapotec region: Coatlán. It includes a detailed analysis and the interpretation which uses data from native language as the key to assign meanings to signs. This and other archaeological materials from the Miahuatlan Valley allow us to discuss the relationship between Zapotec and Mixtec groups, and other peoples that inhabited the Western part of Sierra Sur in Oaxaca. The analysis of this information permits us to propose a model for a common regional history.
