Press representation of anti-Jewish atrocities. A comparative study of Hungarian-language newspapers in Maros-Torda and Udvarhely counties (1940-1944)

Summary/Abstract: I examined anti-Jewish atrocities in ten Hungarian-language newspapers in Maros-Torda and Udvarhely countiesbetween 1940 and 1944. I was looking for the answer on how public opinion was formed, what eff ect did age-specifi c anti-Semitic articles have. In addition, I also tried to present a more nuanced age picture. My central questions were: how much andwhat information did the population have about the political, social, economic, and cultural situation, marginalization, looting,gathering, ghettoisation, and deportation of Jews? could the population manage to put together and deduce the events aheadof it from the fragments of information in the newspapers? I also studied archival documents of KEOKH (National CentralControl Authority of Foreigners) to identify specifi c action taken against the Jews.
