Summary/Abstract: The serial novel was one of the principal literary expressions of the nineteenth century. Its impact was such that, in accordance with European fashion, a good deal of Mexican writers also relied on this mode of publication. Vicente Riva Palacio was one of the most successful writers of this novelistic subgenre. All of his novels were published as serials in La Orquesta, a renowned newspaper, and all employ the literary techniques and resources developed by the European serials, particularly those by Spanish writers. The purpose of this article is to reflect on a number of Riva Palacio’s narrative resources in Monja y casada, virgen y mártir in order to display the manner in which he intertwines the serial construction with the typical elements of the historical novel. This analysis will underscore the value that the serial novel had as the structuring feature of his poetics.
