Summary/Abstract: Places of memory consist of museums, monuments, cemeteries, sculptures, buildings, squares, streets, historical conservation projects, memorials, plaques, rituals, portrayals and all practices related to them. These features emphasize the symbolic meaning of places and function as political competition nodes for various identities such as race, class, gender and nation. Places of memories are constructed mostly as a result of political project aimed to show current power relations of society or to abort previous ones. The aim of this study is to review the literature by focusing on practices of memory. The literature has been organized into three thematic chapter: (a) the sacralise of national imaginations, (b) changing political regimes, (c) conflicts over national places.
