Summary/Abstract: Kashgar, one of the cities of East Turkistan, has been called by different names in various periods. Kashgar city, which means Srikirtati in Sankrit, revealed in the Buddhist book called Hsüan Tsang as Chia-Sha and in Chinese sources as Su-lek and Khü-sha. The city was recorded as an army-city in Divanı Lügat-üt Türk. Researchers studying the name of Kashgar etymologically declared that by joining the Persian suffix Ger to the Persian word Kashi (ceramics), it becomes Kashi-Ger, meaning ceramics city or city with embroidery. In the works of Islamic Geographers, the city was recorded as Kashgar, Kacgar and Kashhar. The city of Kashgar had an economically strategic place because of its location on the Historical Silk Road, and its status at the crossroads of roads from China, Russia, India, Afghanistan and West Turkistan. This decisive location made the city of Kashgar a centre of wholesale shopping on the Silk Road. It became a centre of attraction in marketing, which led to the development of trade, agriculture, animal husbandry, mining and handicrafts.
