THE EFFECT OF TURKEY’S COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGE IN PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY ON THE EXPORT OF THE SECTOR: TIME SERIES ANALYSIS

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this study to investigate the Turkey’s dynamic revealed comparative advantage in pharmaceutical industry on its products exports. In this framework revealed comparative advantage index used in this study is defined as the form having the temporal dynamic comparison of the normalized revealed comparative advantage index (NRCA). Furthermore, for determining of the effects of the real exchange rate and the production capacity in order to determine the cost of inputs, the pharmaceutical industry’s the production index in Turkey was added to the model. The export model created was analyzed using time series techniques that take structural breaks into account. In this framework, the addition of the dynamic form of the NRCA index to the export model is the point that distinguishes this study from other studies. Analysis results showed that the factors affecting pharmaceutical product exports are only industrial production index. Industrial production index had a negative impact on exports. The reason why NRCA has no effect on exports has been discussed. The time period covered in the study is 2005:02-2019:12, including monthly series.
