Summary/Abstract: Leichte Sprache is addressed to people with intellectual and learning disabilities and also to other groups with difficulties in reading and understanding standard written texts. The equivalent to Leichte Sprache in Englisch-speaking countries is a concept of Easy-to-read. The aim of the article is to show the characteristic features of the Leichte Sprache phenomenon, to give a short description of its basic principles by means of German examples, as well as to discuss the potential and significance of the phenomenon from the perspective of social communication, as well as from the perspective of didactics of German as a second language.
