Summary/Abstract: As a text-based approach to language textlinguistic acting on the assumption that a kind of relation exists between words and sentences regards seven criteria: cohesion, coherence, intentionality, situationality, acceptability, informativity and intertextuality. Cohesion belonging to the category of surface structure and falling into two types as grammatical and lexical cohesion investigates the concrete relationship between sentence meaning and word order. Cohesion relating directly to surface text is classified as the most important criteria of textuality. The topic of this study carried out in the context of textlinguistic criteria is analysis of a short story “A Crossbreed” by Kafka and explanation of the surface structure of this text. In this study, the basic layer of the narrative will be determined first. Following the determination of this basic transformation, which begins with the desire of the main character to get rid of the object in his hands and is completed with the renunciation of this desire, the lower layers of the narrative will be examined. These seven different sub-layers, which are patterned together on the narrative floor and form the skeleton of the basic narrative layer, also contain transformations within themselves and they contribute to the integration of the main character of the narrative with the object it wants to get rid of.
