Summary/Abstract: Greece does not officially recognize the existence of national and religious minorities other than Muslims in Western Thrace. However, Macedonians, Turks, Albanians, Vlachs and Roma have the legally guaranteed freedom to form their own organizations, cultural associations and publications in their mother tongue, but without specifying the ethnic character. Macedonians in Greece managed to form their own party called Rainbow. Attempts to establish national ie. Macedonian, Turkish or Albanian ethnic features of their organizations do not give positive results. Appeals to the Court of Human Rights do not yield results in that regard either. They are not respected by the Greek authorities. In order to exercise their rights, they have to go to court individually. More and more EU countries are pointing to the need for greater Greek involvement in the protection of the rights of ethnic and religious minorities, and compliance with legislation to fully respect fundamental human rights and freedoms.
