Summary/Abstract: The article is based on personal observations of the author in the field of both ancient and new keyboard music and instruments and her work with the composer Lazar Nikolov. The text is a special look at some historical processes in the development of the keyboard and the keyboard way of thinking (and their reflection) in the creative work of Lazar Nikolov, examined through the perspective of morphological fields. Outlined are the characteristics of the conscious reflection upon earlier musical practices in present cultural situation, in comparison with the views of the heirs to the “Romantic “tradition (such as Alois Kontarsky and Lazar Nikolov). Motivated is the idea of the piano as Lazar Nikolov’s creative laboratory. The piano, as a core, has been traced in historical aspect, as well as particularly in the creative development of Lazar Nikolov.
