Summary/Abstract: The present study summarizes the aspects of social meaning which can be found in sociolinguistics. On the other hand, it also creates a connection between linguistic attitude and collective social meaning. Furthermore, it presents how collective social meaning manifests itself in a research carried out among elementary school pupils in Vojvodina on their attitude to dialects. A distinction is made between social meaning and collective social meaning. The former deals with social forces influencing an individual’s speech, while the latter looks into societal factors influencing the community. At the same time, social meaning points towards interactional sociolinguistics as well as pragmatics.
