Expansion of submarine fleets of the South China Sea basin

Summary/Abstract: Growing tensions in the South China Sea region, combined with thedevelopment of the Peoples Liberation Army Navy and economic growth is South EastAsia, enabled the SEA states to create, modernize or develop the submarine force. Inthe South China Sea region, almost all states (with the exception of Brunei andCambodia) decided to build up their submarine capabilities. The Peoples Republic ofChina is an unquestionable leader in this field, however countries like Philippines,Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore and Taiwan are also trying to improve theirsubmarine force. In the case of the PRC, there is not only question of the submarinewarfare capabilities, but also submarine forces are an important part of China’s nucleardeterrence. The other mentioned states are trying to gain some military and politicaladvantages connected with possessing the modern submarine forces.
