Summary/Abstract: In the past two decades discourses of cultural self-reflections put more and more emphasis on integrating those attitudinal changes into structures of art – therefore literature as well – which arose after the Balkan war. In my study I am trying to approach the “possible” and the “impossible” in the novel “The Waves of the River Una” by Faruk Šehić, because the work shows us images from the recent past, which evoke entities that European culture bears as the burden of history. Thus, referentiality and factuality as an important potential of artistic attitude gain great emphasis in the novel: the mode of literary speech which brings to life the dialogue of reality and near-reality.
