Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to provide a brief overview of the creation of the capital market and its impact on the economic development of the Republic of Montenegro. Some basic information on the size, structure and functionality of the Montenegrin capital market are necessary in order to outline the challenges for domestic and foreign investors who are interested in investing in Montenegro. Nevertheless, it is also important to emphasise the main obstacles a small country such as Montenegro is facing on its path to achieve standards which will stimulate the Republic to enter the European Union. In addition, the article traces current issues in the Montenegrin capital market, focusing on the New Securities Exchange of Montenegro (NEX Montenegro), for an assessment of the role of the capital market in the development process of the country.
