Summary/Abstract: The irony appears as a word game and can be associated to other figures of speech such as hyperboles, litotes, oxymorons and of course anti-thesis, which relies on terms of contradictory meaning. In François Weyergans` case, a belgian writer, member of the French Academy, we find an unique manifestation of this two way phenomenon, going from present to past, covered in this son to father after-death discourse expressed by the son, haunted by the desire to reveal to his father things left unsaid. The similar occupation of the father and son, without sharing thus the same values as writers, and their distant relationship justifies the son’s identity crisis. This contradictory alliance between the appearance of the text and the message hides this feeling, which we share with the author, when decrypting the secret code of irony.
