Summary/Abstract: Turkish modernization and industrialization in the 20th century, brought along a housing shortage for the workers and officials in the industrialized cities. Housing cooperatives established by the Social Insurance Institution have become widespread to solve this problem. Çamkent housing cooperative, established for Karabük Iron and Steel Factory officials, is an example from Karabük industrial city in this context. Çamkent housing cooperative was selected since it is one of the first examples of these sort of cooperatives with a modern identity in the modernization process of Karabük. In this context, the aim is to examine the modern architectural identity of Çamkent housing cooperative. Archival documents obtained from Karabük Municipality were reviewed to elaborate on the architectural identity of the buildings and their design-facade sketches. Accordingly, it was discovered that the buildings were designed in line with the architectural perspective of the period with modern principles. Besides being a partial solution to the housing shortage problem, the buildings have initiated a new architectural representation for the city with their modern identity. As they have been an effective tool in the modern architectural development of the city with a modernist function.
