Summary/Abstract: The purpose of this article is to understand why the late Roman / Early Byzantine cities in Illyricum prefecture were the target of "barbaric" invasions in late antiquity. "Barbaric" aggression is often taken for granted, which does not require much thought. In this case, the focus is on the specific causes of aggression against the cities and their connection to the functioning or needs of the "barbarian" tribes (Goths, Huns, Avars, Slavs). Thus, the article is a (temporary) attempt to classify the causes of an attack. There are four specific reasons for attacking cities - 1. Seizure of material goods (through robbery and tribute), 2. Strategic pressure on the empire in an attempt to expand its territory, 3. Creating bases for breakthrough and withdrawal in deeper migrations / invasions , and 4. Settlement in Imperial Territory. The ultimate goal of the article is to contribute to our understanding of the causes of the suffering of late ancient cities in the Balkans.
