Summary/Abstract: In September 1901 the American Methodist missionary Ellen Stone and her companion Katerina Cilka were kidnapped in Ottoman Macedonia by the rebel group of Jane Sandanski and released in February 1902 after a high ransom had been paid. This incident, at that time widely known as the „Miss Stone Affair“, turned into a major transnational media event which, by the sensationalist covering, contributed to the consolidation of a rather negative image of the Balkans in the Western public.
